Bob Bakert, JGT Editor: I’m so grateful to interview Kurt Rosenwinkel. When we started the magazine I always had Kurt in mind. He is the quintessential forward-thinking progressive jazz guitarist. I’m always in a “pinch me” mode when I get to have a conversation about what the great artists like Kurt are doing today, and, what we all have to look forward to from them … Please enjoy Kurt Rosenwinkel.

Kurt Rosenwinkel: Ultimate Book of Compositions
8 years in the making, over 1500 pages, and over 150 compositions, Kurt Rosenwinkel: Ultimate Book of Compositions is the definitive songbook encompassing the entire compositional journey of the legendary jazz guitarist and composer.
The 580-page physical book follows Kurt chronologically with scores for all of his recorded music proofread by the composer himself. Additionally, the physical book is enriched by the author’s comments about each composition and album, supported by archival photography and original manuscripts.
Kurt Rosenwinkel’s The Next Step Band (Live at Smalls 1996) record puts you, the listener, right there in that dimly-lit Greenwich Village underground where the finest musicians in the world have pushed their abilities to the very limit. The energy, the passion, the visionary flame that turned Kurt Rosenwinkel’s eight-year Tuesday night Small’s residency into the stuff of myth and fable is all brought to life on this newest release from Heartcore Records. Perhaps Mitch Borden, the revered owner of Small’s said it best when he recalled “Kurt Rosenwinkel’s band played with such dramatic fire that it would consume everyone present.“
The album is available for pre-order at Heartcore Records since June 14th (the first single A Shifting Design release) and will be released on CD and as a digital album worldwide on all digital platforms on July 26th, 2024.
