D’Angelico Releases New Excel Series Throwback Collection at NAMM 2020
The Excel Series Throwback Collection
Incorporating details and design elements from John D’Angelico’s original archtops as they became more ornate throughout the 1940s, both the single-cutaway EXL-1 Throwback and non-cutaway Style B Throwback feature the new 7-ply scroll-style headstock design, macassar ebony headstock plate, ebony fingerboard, throwback f-holes, satin ebony pickguards, and two new finishes—Vintage Natural and Viola.
EXCEL EXL-1 THROWBACK
A vintage spin on our flagship model, the Excel EXL-1 Throwback embodies the legacy of fine archtops. A 17-inch-wide, 3-inch-deep body emanates warm, woody archtop tone propelled by a single floating Seymour Duncan Johnny Smith mini-humbucker. And visually—it’s hard to look away. Old-school full-fret mother-of-pearl fingerboard inlays on an ebony fingerboard lead to a scroll-style headstock designed by John D’Angelico in the 30s, while a satin ebony pickguard meets a spruce top featuring multi-bound Throwback f-holes
EXCEL STYLE B THROWBACK
Back by popular demand and reimagined for the first time since its debut, the Excel Style B Throwback is a slimmed down non-cutaway archtop and time machine to the Jazz Age. A slim-C neck profile, shallow upper bout depth, and 25-inch scale length make the Style B Throwback a notably comfortable archtop while still maintaining robust acoustic tone. Old-school details and Throwback Collection appointments—including the scroll-style headstock designed by John D’Angelico in the 30s—make the Style B a visual stunner
Both models are $1999.99 and will be available at select dealers on Thursday, January 16th.
