Robben Ford Plays Atlanta’s City Winery

Bob Bakert, Editor of Jazz Guitar Today: It was great to hear Robben Ford at the City Winery Atlanta – Friday, January 24.

The band was on point with very deep grooves set up by the rhythm section of Brian Allen on bass and Wes Little on drums. Robben is releasing a new EP this July with sax great Bill Evans but for this gig, top Nashville session player Doug Moffet was brought in on tenor and soprano. They played a couple of tunes from that upcoming release and the unison lines with Robben and Doug were a highlight and a glimpse of what we can expect on the new release.

The house sound was very good and Robben played most of the night on his 1966 Epiphone Riviera through his Iconic Dumble (pictured above). And I had a chance to take a close look at his pedal board (opening shot). The tone was classic, chunky with lots of blues/jazz vibe. I loved it!

Bob Bakert’s love of all things guitar started when he was twelve years old. While starting with folk tunes and top 40 music of the day, his interest developed over the years to R&B, rock and of course, jazz. Bob has studied many styles of guitar but improvisation has always been at the heart of his style. He has studied with many prestigious teachers including NY studio legend Andy Roemer and GSU’s Dave Frackenpohl.

In addition to co-founding the Frank Hamilton School of Folk music in Atlanta, Bob has mentored several venues and concert series. He is currently on the board of directors for one of Billboard Magazines “Best Jazz Clubs”, The Velvet Note in Alpharetta, GA.

More recently, Bob was the “Rudder” at Eastman Stringed Instruments – providing guidance on a variety of sales, product development and artist relations projects. As with many in the Jazz Guitar Today audience, Bob has an insatiable appetite for guitar and a desire to share his love of the instrument.
