In this ‘Student Spotlight’, Frank Vignola brings one of his students to our attention.
Bob Bakert, Editor of Jazz Guitar Today: Frank Vignola is one of my all time favorite guitarist. He is an amazing player and prodigious guitar educator and a huge supporter of JGT. When Frank recommends talent to me I am all ears. Meet Don Parker. He is a 16 year old multi genre instrumentalist and on this video displays great feel, tone and understatement and it is easy to see why Frank thinks so much of his talent.
Don Parker is a 16-year old guitar instrumentalist and bassist who plays many different styles and instruments. His styles include jazz, funk, fusion with flamenco, classical, surf, and instrumental rock. Don started playing guitar when he was 6 and began performing onstage in bands and as guest artists at 7. Don has performed as a guest artist with a variety of bands and artists including Frank Vignola & Vinny Raniolo, the Pyronauts (Tim Stephenson, Paul Beatie, Bob Bitchin), Dusty Watson, and The Sneaky Tikis. Don was chosen for California Band Directors Association (CBDA) All-State Jazz Ensembles in 2018 and Nor-Cal Jazz Honor Band (NCBA) in 2020.
Don brings a variety of stringed instruments, such as the mountain dulcimer, Greek bouzouki, banjo, and mandolin to the stage. His jazz guitar style is influenced by Django Reinhardt, Pat Metheny, Tommy Emmanuel, Frank Vignola & Vinny Raniolo, and BB King.
