John Stowell and Steve Herberman teamed up to co-teach a class on soloing strategies over “How Deep Is The Ocean” by Irving Berlin.
In this video Steve and John trade sections of the tune and improvise chord solos in real time recorded for the instructional class for Mikeβs Masterclasses.
In the class, comparisons are made of the original Berlin changes to the Jim Hall and Bill Evans changes as well as chord substitutions that are commonly used to enhance the harmonic movements from chord to chord. John and Steve demonstrate and discuss universal chord soloing and single-note concepts that apply to this great commonly played tune.
