In this JGT video podcast, ‘Berklee College of Music’s guitar brain trust: Kim Perlak, Sheryl Bailey, and Larry Baione talk about their new guitar instruction book, “Berklee Guitar Theory”.
The standard worldwide for higher education guitar programs, Berklee College of Music was the first institution of higher education to grant a degree with guitar as the principal instrument. To this day, Berklee’s Guitar Department remains the largest and most stylistically diverse guitar program in the world.
Bob Bakert: “Berklee Guitar Theory” was five years in the making, curated by the current chair, Kim Perlak, who herself is a classical-style player. I got my copy, perused it, and I can tell you this is an incredible piece of work. (Applause, take a bow Berklee) It is comprehensive and mirrors the rigors and expectations of the degree program in guitar at Berklee College of Music. It was a collaborative effort of all the faculty answering the question: βWhat do they, our students, and charges need to learnββ¦answer: A LOT!!! The good news is, that you donβt have to spend 4 years full-time. You can grab what interests you, dare I say “Cherry Pickβ from the materials what interests you. This book is a bargainβ¦ buy it, and start working on it, it will make you a better guitar player!
Many of the world’s most ground-breaking guitarists studied at Berklee, including Mike Stern, Leni Stern, Kevin Eubanks, Bill Frisell, Gillian Welch, Emily Remler, John Scofield, Steve Vai, St. Vincent, and Adrianne Lenker and Buck Meek of Big Thief. Their alumni community includes current and former faculty such as Mick Goodrick, Pat Metheny, Sheryl Bailey, Wayne Krantz, Tomo Fujita, David Tronzo, and Tim Miller.
