JGT’s Bob Bakert talks to guitarist Dan Wilson about his influences, his experiences, and his latest project, “Things Eternal”.

Bob Bakert, Editor: Dan Wilson is an undeniable force and presence on today’s jazz guitar scene. Literally, everyone who follows Jazz Guitar Today that I spoke with mentioned Dan Wilson as a player they want to know more about and who deserves the attention. We agree! Dan is a very hard-working “all-in” man. He is as knowledgeable about his vocation as anyone I have ever met. Blessed with great talent and an unstoppable drive for excellence, Dan Wilson deserves every accolade he receives. He was selected by Joey de Francesco to hold down the guitar chair. No easy task considering Joey was a collaborator with the legendary Pat Martino and knew a few things about great guitarists.

It’s not hard to realize why Dan is so highly thought of.  His playing is second to none. Please enjoy Jazz Guitar Today’s interview with Dan Wilson.

Things Eternal” is Dan Wilson’s second album with Brother Mister Productions, his mentor Christian McBride’s imprint under the Mack Avenue Music Group umbrella, following 2021’s Vessels of Wood and Earth. McBride also served as co-producer on the project.

The album kicks off with a vibrant cover of “Sticology.” Wilson chose this song for the project specifically as he feels it is a regional treasure. “It contains everything that I like about music: a driving bass line, a singable melody and well-structured harmony. We had a chance to develop this arrangement over multiple performances last summer, and this recording represents the culmination of that time spent on the road. I have great respect and admiration for Phillip Jones, the composer who wrote the song when he was just 17 years old. The song is considered a classic in my hometown in Northeast Ohio, and I want to share it with whoever will listen.”
