London trio St. Barbe Release New EP

Published

on

Known for their progressive, genre-bending brand of math rock and contemporary jazz, London 3-piece St. Barbe share their new EP ‘Shoal’ on February 18th.

The follow up to 2021s ‘Shapeless’ and 2022 singles ‘Noumena’ and ‘Tellicherry’, the group have taken their time to finely craft this new set of music, setting up their own studio space, and bringing in features like Mercury Prize-shortlisted future jazz artist corto.alto to expand on their distinctive sound and musical horizons.

Musically, the group carve out a unique niche here, sitting somewhere between the metric whirlwind of crossover groups like Waldo’s Gift and Kneebody, whilst also leaning into the progressive rock influences of Animals as Leaders and Sungazer. Across tracks like ‘Tierra’, North African rhythmic leanings come to the forefront, with the trio drawing on artists such as Karim Ziad and Lionel Loueke to combine densely-layered percussion with intricate polyrhythmic patterns.
