I hope to hear you again at a gig, and I hope and pray that you stay healthy, enjoy your birthday, and keep making joyous music!

I finally left the UK shores and shortly afterwards you came over. I did finally get to see you live in LA. You have made one of the greatest contributions to the development of jazz guitar, which is very widely appreciated by so many of us. Know at the ripe old age of 75 years, we still think about you an awful lot and long may that continue. Happy Birthday!

Brian Usher: I remember that my guitar teacher turned me on to Pat’s records when I was in high school. I have been an avid follower ever since. I’m a retired band director now, but I still play gigs on a regular basis. I saw Pat perform in Minneapolis in 1977 when he was on his Joyous Lake tour. Wow, what a concert! He was gracious enough to have a drink with me after his show. Jump ahead forty years when I saw Pat’s organ trio in Denver in 2017. I took along a photo of the two of us from 1977 and yes, we had a drink together after his show again. Thank you Pat for being you and sharing with us! I hope that you have a swingin’ birthday!

Robert Taft: Dear Pat, Happy Birthday! I wish to thanks you for providing me over 47 years of pleasure and inspiration. I first heard you in 1972 when a friend gave me a copy of “Live”. From there it was on to Coltrane, Davis, Montgomery etc. In 2001, I suffered a severe injury to my left hand. I had contemplated giving up on music but your health and subsequent recovery provided me the motivation to plug on. I don’t play the same way I did before my accident and I have accepted that fact but I still enjoy expressing myself through my instrument and for that I am grateful. Have a great birthday and thank you again for the love and inspiration shown through your music.

Ken Karsh: Happy Birthday to one of my musical heroes. You have been a major influence on me since I was 11 years old. And you are a wonderful and sweet human being! Enjoy your 75th rotation around the sun!

Dave Bold: Happy birthday Pat! I’ve loved your playing ever since I discovered a copy of Exit in a London record shop back in 1977. What an influence! I immediately bought all the other albums I could find (cost me a blimmin’ fortune!). I loved the unique sound you have, the flow and ideas but especially the elegiac quality of tunes like Come Sunday and I Remember Clifford on that record. I’d never heard reading of those tunes like that before. Caught you at Ronnie Scotts in 2018, which was wonderful. Hope you can make it over to London again at some point soon. Have a great birthday and thanks again for all the wonderful music.
_______________________________
Ken Seeton: Happy Birthday Pat! You’ve been a forceful guiding hand for me as a Jazz guitar player, and I’m not only grateful for your influence on my playing and style, but also your character and life story is inspirational. Your an idol, a mentor, and my sensei. Here’s wishing many more celebratories in the years to come! Happy 75th! Cheers!

Wayne Wilkinson: Mr. Martino, As part of an International Quartet tour in the United Kingdom (UK) this May, each member of the group performed an original song about a musician that inspired them. I recognized your influence throughout my career and legacy contribution to Jazz Guitar with “Martino’s Waltz,” which was inspired by your song “The Visit.” Audiences are amazed when they hear how you not only mastered the guitar once but twice. Your passion for playing continues to inspire guitarists and delight listeners today. Hope you have a wonderful day.
_______________________________
Bob McAlpine: Warmest Birthday Wishes on your 75th, Pat! I was first made aware of you when I was a student in the jazz program at Humber College in Toronto. Decades later, I was introduced to your manager, Joe Donofrio, who has now been a friend and has managed one of the bands I play with since 2009. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the ways in which you have influenced me as a guitar player. In particular, three aspects of your playing come to mind – your phrasing, your tone, and your chord voicings. Your approach for applying the same chord shapes over different sets of 3 or 4 strings has been a most beneficial and useful idea. Thank you for everything you have done for jazz, Pat, and for your many years of great guitar playing. And once again, Happy Birthday!
