Guitarist John Stowell Performs an Original Composition, ‘Shiffletting’

Guitarist and JGT contributor, John Stowell provides the transcribed music and video performance for this original composition.

John Stowell: “My practice routine often involves finding new chords in the context of simple exercises and progressions. My tunes are all composed as chord melodies, and they evolve from my chord investigations. I generally favor pianistic sounding inversions that often employ close intervals, open strings, double stops, some inner voice movement counterpoint. I’ll often find broader applications for some of the chords that I find when composing my tunes. These include ideas for comping and using new inversions as templates on the neck for creating single lines. On my tune “Shiffletting” (dedicated to bassist John Shifflett), I’m playing the melody rubato. You may find some new minor, altered dominant chords open string voicings in the melody. This tune is on my “Rain Painting” CD, a duo project with bassist/vocalist Dan Dean, which will be released on the Origin label in early 2021.”
